After a week of poor weather the 10 members of the group met at the NT carpark in glorious weather and walked to Merope Rocks above Mother Ivy's Lifeboat station before heading back to carpark area for a picnic lunch overlooking Trevose head. After lunch 5 of the group went down towards Booby's bay in the hope of finding Corn Buntings which we didn't manage to find unfortunately.
25 species of bird were found and 8 species of butterfly. It was great to watch Gannets diving for fish not too far off the coast and a kestrel hunting next to us at lunch. There were still swallows and wheatear about and one skylark was seen but they have stopped calling by now. Herring and great black backed gulls were seen as well as one Fulmar. Many expected species such as wood pigeons, rock pipits, raven, crows, rooks, jackdaws, cormorants, shags and magpies. There was a very large flock of Linnets, lots of Stonechats and one Purple Sandpiper out in the surf on some rocks with a few Oyster catchers. We also found several wrens in thick bushes, a buzzard overhead and a blackbird. Unexpectedly a grey Heron flew past over the ocean - or had we seen a purple heron and not realised as some reported in Cornwall at this time - we will never know!!
The butterflies gave a great display and we saw Wall browns, gatekeepers, common blues, meadow browns, red admiral, large whites, small coppers and small heath.
